Satrajitastvamatha lubdhavadarkalabdham divyam syamantakamanim bhagavannayachih, tatkaranam bahuvidham mama bhati nunam tasyatmajam tvayi ratam chhalato vivodhum.

Then, O Lord, as if out of greed, you asked Satrajit for the divine Syamantaka gem he had received from the Sun. The reasons seem many to me, but surely one was a ruse to marry his daughter, who loved you.

Adattam tam tubhyam manivaramanenalpamanasa prasenastadbhrata galabhuvi vahanprapa mrigayam, ahannenam simho manimahasi mamsabhramavashat kapindrastam hatva manimapi cha balaya dadivan.

That narrow-minded man did not give you the gem. His brother Prasena wore it on his neck and went hunting; a lion, mistaking the gem’s glow for meat, killed him, and Jambavan killed the lion and gave the gem to his child.

Shashamsuh satrajidgiramanu janastvam maniharam jananam piyusham bhavati guninam doshakanika, tatah sarvajnopi svajanasahito marganaparah prasenam tam drishtva harimapi gatobhuh kapiguham.

Following Satrajit’s words, people said you had stolen the gem; even a speck of fault in the virtuous is nectar to gossips. So, though all-knowing, you went searching with your people, found Prasena and the lion dead, and entered Jambavan’s cave.

Bhavantamavitarkayannativayah svayam jambavan mukundasharanam hi mam ka iha roddhumityalapan, vibho raghupate hare jaya jayetyalam mushtibhishchiram tava samarchanam vyadhita bhaktachudamanih.

Not recognising you, the aged Jambavan said: I am under Mukunda’s protection; who here can stop me? And crying Lord, Raghupati, Hari, victory, victory, that crown jewel of devotees long worshipped you with his fists.

Buddhvatha tena dattam navaramanim varamanim cha parigrihnan, anugrihnannamumagah sapadi cha satrajite manim pradah.

Then, recognising you, he gave you a young bride and the precious gem. Accepting them and blessing him, you returned and at once gave the gem to Satrajit.

Tadanu sa khalu vridalolo vilolavilochanam duhitaramaho dhimanbhamam giraiva pararpitam, adita manina tubhyam labhyam sametya bhavanapi pramuditamanastasyaivadanmanim gahanashayah.

Then that clever man, shaken with shame, gave you his restless-eyed daughter Bhama, whom he had promised to another only in word, together with the gem; and you, deep in purpose and pleased, gave the gem back to him.

Vridakulam ramayati tvayi satyabhamam kaunteyadahakathayatha kurunprayate, hi gandineyakritavarmagira nipatya satrajitam shatadhanurmanimajahara.

While you were delighting the shy Satyabhama, and then went to the Kurus on hearing of the burning of Kunti’s sons, alas, Shatadhanva, urged by Akrura and Kritavarma, killed Satrajit and took the gem.

Shokatkurunupagatamavalokya kantam hatva drutam shatadhanum samaharshayastam, ratne sashanka iva maithilagehametya ramo gadam samashishikshata dhartarashtram.

Seeing your beloved come to the Kurus in grief, you quickly killed Shatadhanva and comforted her. Balarama, as if doubting you about the gem, went to the house of the Mithila king and taught the mace to Duryodhana.

Akrura esha bhagavan bhavadichchhayaiva satrajitah kucharitasya yuyoja himsam, akrurato manimanahritavanpunastvam tasyaiva bhutimupadhatumiti bruvanti.

They say, O Lord, that it was by your will alone that Akrura brought about the death of the wrongdoer Satrajit, and that you did not take the gem back from Akrura so as to bring him prosperity.

Bhaktastvayi sthiratarah sa hi gandineyastasyaiva kapathamatih kathamisha jata, vijnanavanprashamavanahamityudirnam garvam dhruvam shamayitum bhavata kritaiva.

Akrura, son of Gandini, was a steadfast devotee of yours; how then, O Lord, did his mind turn to the wrong path? Surely you did it yourself, to humble the pride that had risen in him: I am wise and serene.

Yatam bhayena kritavarmayutam punastamahuya tadvinihitam cha manim prakashya, tatraiva suvratadhare vinidhaya tushyan bhamakuchantarashayah pavanesha payah.

When he fled in fear with Kritavarma, you called him back, had him reveal the gem he had hidden, and contentedly left it with him, keeper of good vows. O Lord of Guruvayur, who rests in Bhama’s embrace, protect me.
