Pradyumna, Rukmini’s son and a part of you, was carried off by Shambara; he killed him, came home with Rati, and won Rukmi’s blessed daughter. His son, the virtuous Aniruddha, married Rochana, Rukmi’s granddaughter; at that wedding Balarama killed Rukmi over a quarrel at dice.

Usha, the famed daughter of Bana, the thousand-armed son of Bali and a devotee of Shiva, saw your grandson Aniruddha in a dream without ever having met him, and was sick with longing, O Lord.

Her friend Chitralekha, a highly skilled yogini, drew pictures of all the young men; Usha recognised Aniruddha among them, and by yogic power Chitralekha brought him from your palace at night.

When Bana, Shiva’s friend, somehow captured Aniruddha as he lived happily with his beloved in the maidens’ palace, you, furious on hearing the news from Narada, besieged Bana’s city of Shonitapura with the Yadavas.

The city’s protector, Lord Shiva, husband of the mountain’s daughter, with his hosts of spirits boldly held back the Yadava army. Mighty Bana fought Satyaki, Skanda fought Pradyumna, and you faced Shiva, destroyer of the three cities.

When all his weapons were countered and Shiva was dazed by your weapon, the frightened spirits fled and the heroes of his hosts were crushed. Skanda was driven back by Pradyumna’s flower arrows, and the minister Kumbhanda was shattered by Balarama like a new clay pot.

When Bana came on with five hundred bows and they were all cut, Shiva’s fever-spirit attacked and was itself burned by your fever. Wise, it praised you, promised freedom from fever to those who love your story, and left still burning. Fierce beings, though wise within, often act fiercely from darkness.

When Bana attacked again, fierce with many weapons, you cut off all his arms for his pride, and Shankara, understanding, praised you. At his word you left Bana two arms, made him fearless and spared him; honoured by him, you returned home with Aniruddha and Usha.

Again and again you prevailed over the gods: Indra; Varuna when Nanda was carried off; Yama when you brought back the boy; Agni when you swallowed the forest fire; Brahma when the calves were stolen; and here Shiva in Bana’s battle. O Lord, this incarnation of yours, supreme in the world, is victorious.
