In this world, knowledge, faith, the doer, one’s dwelling, happiness, action and food each take low, middle and high forms according to the three qualities. But whatever is turned toward you, such as your holy places and your worship, is said to be beyond the qualities. By devotedly following that, may I soon be fulfilled.

With my mind placed in you alone, moving about happily, doing all my acts for your sake, dwelling in holy places frequented by your devotees and walked by you, seeing a thief, a Brahmin and animals alike, free of faults such as contempt, rivalry and envy, may I always worship you in all beings.

Until your presence shines clearly in them, I will worship in this way, and when the knowledge of oneness suddenly blossoms, may I live full of you. O Lord, nothing begun in this dharma of yours is ever lost; so, O all-pervading one, grant me wholeheartedly the lovely path of devotion.

To make this path of devotion firm I need health and long life; and happily, even for these your feet are to be served, as milk serves both as medicine and food. For long ago Markandeya, told by astrologers he would live only twelve years, served you devotedly for a year, and your attendants drove death away.

That long-lived Markandeya, devoted to you, spent six Manvantaras in penance on the banks of the Pushpabhadra, rejoicing in matchless bliss. The seventh Indra tried to bewitch him with heavenly women, breezes and Kama, but they were scorched by the heat of his yoga and failed. Who can defeat your devotee?

Then, lovingly, you came to his side as Narayana with Nara. He praised you joyfully, but though you tempted him with many boons, he would not accept them. His heart content with devotion, he asked instead to see your maya; not knowing the sorrow it brings, surely he sought it out of wonder.

When you had gone, the world was soon drowned in the seven seas, swollen and churning with rain pouring from wind-tossed clouds. Wandering in the waters for crores of years, wretched, he saw far off a wondrous child lying on a banyan leaf: you, dark-limbed, with your toe placed in your lotus mouth.

Seeing you, the great sage, thrilled, hurried toward you wanting to touch you, and drawn in with your breath, he saw all the worlds again inside you. Breathed out once more, he met your glance; as he moved joyfully to embrace you, your form vanished, and he was in his hermitage as before.

Then Shiva, destroyer of the three cities, came before him with Gauri, wanting to see your beloved devotee; he granted him freedom from old age and death and powers he already had, and departed. Since even Shiva, enemy of Kama, is pleased by service to you, it became clear that you are the self of the three deities and the ruler of all.

In the threefold Satyaloka the abodes of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva rise one above another, and above them all shines Vaikuntha, free from the changes of maya. There, in the causal waters, and among the cowherds too, you are pure goodness alone, the one Brahman of being and awareness. O Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from all illness.
