As Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar, your terrible roar rang out, shattering his ears and shaking the hollow of the cosmic egg. Hearing it, a tremor he had never known entered the demon king’s heart, and even Brahma was shaken on his seat.

As the furious demon cast his eyes in every direction, your form emerged from the pillar, O Lord, neither wholly beast nor wholly man. While he wondered, bewildered, What is this terrible, wondrous thing?, you swelled to a vast size, your body bristling with fierce, flashing white hair.

May this form of yours triumph: its rolling, fierce eyes the colour of molten gold, its quivering mane crowding the sky, its gaping mouth like a great cave, fearsome with a pair of huge fangs and a vast tongue flashing like a sword.

I bow to your Narasimha form: its jaws terrible with rippling folds, its neck short and massive, its hundred stout arms fearsome with the cruel gleam of their claws, its roar like thunderclouds beyond the sky scattering every challenger.

Thinking, This must be Vishnu; I will kill him, the demon king rushed at you whirling his terrible mace, and you caught him in your mighty arms. The warrior slipped free, took up sword and shield, showed many skilled moves, and attacked you again as you stood ready to swallow the worlds.

Seizing that vilest son of Diti again in your arms, you swiftly laid him across your thighs at the threshold, drove your claws into his chest and tore it open; drinking deep in triumph the blood that poured out, you let out lion roars that could destroy many worlds.

Casting aside the slain demon, your towering body drenched in waves of blood, you leapt up and began devouring the whole host of demons. Then all the world fell into turmoil: the earth reeled, the oceans shook, mountains tottered, and the beings of the sky fled upward.

Your body fearsome with flesh and fat, wearing a terrible garland of entrails, blazing with rage in the middle of the hall, your mighty roar unstoppable, no one in the world could come near you. Shiva, Brahma, Indra and the rest stood far off in fear and praised you one by one.

While your rage still burned, the boy Prahlada, at Brahma’s bidding, fearlessly bowed at your feet. Overflowing with compassion, you grew calm and laid your hand on his head; and as he sang your praises, you gave boons to him, though he wanted nothing, and grace to the world.

O Lord who acted out such fierce deeds, whose whole glory is clearly sung in the Nrisimha Tapaniya Upanishad, whose form is utterly pure: who could ever surpass you, highest of all? O beloved of Prahlada, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from every illness.
