Carrying you, Vasudeva, best of the Yadus, set out and saw the Yamuna, its waters surging sky-high. Ah, at that very moment the vast flood, as if raised by magic, sank to the depth of his ankles.

He entered the cowherds’ home, where the women slept, the door stood open and a baby girl cried softly. Laying you on the birthing bed and taking the girl, who was Maya in disguise, he hurried back to his city.

Then the guards, woken by the cry of your little sister, rushed to report the birth. Distressed, his hair dishevelled, Kamsa, king of the Bhojas, hurried there and, as if disappointed, saw a girl in his sister’s hands.

‘Surely this is a trick of that deceiver Vishnu,’ he thought, and snatching the girl from his sister’s arms, as an elephant plucks a lotus stem from a pond, he dashed your sister against a stone slab.

  5. ததோ ப⁴வது³பாஸகோ ஜ²டிதி ம்ருʼத்யுபாஶாதி³வ ப்ரமுச்ய தரஸைவ ஸா ஸமதிரூ⁴டரூ⁴பாந்தரா।

‘Cruel Kamsa, what do you gain by crushing me? Your killer has been born somewhere; think of your own good.’ Saying this to the villain, your sister, O Lord, praised by the gods, went away and took up her temples on earth.

Next morning, urged by the king after hearing her words, proud demons like Pralamba, Baka and Putana roamed the land fearlessly, killing infants in the hope of killing you. What is too cruel for the merciless?

Then, Mukunda, as you lay crying on the bed of Nanda’s wife, kicking your little feet, the women woke and joyfully announced the birth of a son. What can I say? All of Gokula was astir with excitement.

Ah, Yashoda first drank you in with her eyes, you who steal hearts like a fresh dark flower, then joyfully nursed you at once, touching your lovely body; she outdid all the fortunate ones of the world.

Wishing for your welfare, what did Nanda the cowherd, overflowing with joy, not give to the Brahmins? And what celebrations did the cowherds not hold? O blessing of the three worlds, protect me here from illness.
