Ayi deva pura kila tvayi svayamuttanashaye stanandhaye, parijrimbhanato vyapavrite vadane vishvamachashta vallavi.

O Lord, long ago, as you lay on your back nursing, you yawned, and in your open mouth the cowherd mother saw the whole universe.

Punarapyatha balakaih samam tvayi lilanirate jagatpate, phalasanchayavanchanakrudha tava mridbhojanamuchurarbhakah.

Again, Lord of the world, while you were playing with the boys, they, cross that you had cheated them of their share of fruit, told on you for eating mud.

O Lord, you who swallow earth, water and everything at the end of time: your mother, afraid that eating mud would make you ill, grew angry.

Ayi durvinayatmaka tvaya kimu mritsa bata vatsa bhakshita, iti matrigiram chiram vibho vitatham tvam pratijajnishe hasan.

‘You naughty child, did you really eat mud?’ To your mother’s question, O Lord, you laughed and kept insisting it wasn’t true.

Ayi te sakalairvinishchite vimatishchedvadanam vidaryatam, iti matrivibhartsito mukham vikasatpadmanibham vyadarayah.

‘If you deny what everyone says, open your mouth.’ Scolded thus by your mother, you opened your mouth like a blooming lotus.

Api mrillavadarshanotsukam jananim tam bahu tarpayanniva, prithivim nikhilam na kevalam bhuvananyapyakhilanyadidrishah.

As if to more than satisfy your mother, who only wanted to see a bit of mud, you showed her not just the whole earth but all the worlds.

Kuhachidvanamambudhih kvachit kvachidabhram kuhachidrasatalam, manuja danujah kvachitsura dadrishe kim na tada tvadanane.

Here a forest, there an ocean, here the sky, there the underworld; humans, demons and gods: what was not seen in your mouth then?

She saw you in your mouth in so many forms: resting on the Milk Ocean, dwelling in highest Vaikuntha, and as her own little child in front of her own home.

Vikasadbhuvane mukhodare nanu bhuyopi tathavidhananah, anaya sphutamikshito bhavananavastham jagatam batatanot.

Within your mouth, where the worlds unfolded, she clearly saw you again with such a mouth; ah, this revealed worlds within worlds without end.

Dhritatattvadhiyam tada kshanam jananim tam pranayena mohayan, stanamamba dishetyupasajan bhagavannadbhutabala pahi mam.

When, for a moment, she grasped the truth, you lovingly bewildered your mother again, clinging to her and saying, ‘Mother, give me milk.’ O Lord, wondrous child, protect me.
