Dhyatvabhishtam striyam ratrau japennamasahasrakam, ayati svasamipam sa yadyapyantahpuram gata.

Yatra kutra sthitam vapi kshetrapalo nihanti tam, vidyasu kurute vadam yo vidvannamajapina.
wherever he may be, the guardian of the field destroys him. The scholar who argues against one who chants the names,
Tasya vakstambhanam sadyah karoti nakuleshvari, yo raja kurute vairam namasahasrajapina.
Nakuleshvari at once silences his speech. The king who makes an enemy of one who chants the thousand names,
Chaturangabalam tasya dandini samharetsvayam, yah pathennamasahasram shanmasam bhaktisamyutah.
Dandini herself destroys his fourfold army. Whoever recites the thousand names with devotion for six months,
Lakshmishchanchalyarahita sada tishthati tadgrihe, masamekam pratidinam trivaram yah pathennarah.
Lakshmi stays in their home for good, never restless. Whoever recites it three times a day for a month,
Bharati tasya jihvagre range nrityati nityashah, yastvekavaram pathati pakshamatramatandritah.
Saraswati dances daily on the tip of their tongue as on a stage. Whoever recites it once a day, diligently, for just a fortnight,
Muhyanti kamavashaga mrigakshyastasya vikshanat, yah pathennamasahasram janmamadhye sakrinnarah.
becomes so charming that others are captivated by a single glance. Whoever recites the thousand names even once in a lifetime,
Taddrishtigocharassarve muchyante sarvakilbishaih, yo vetti namasahasram tasmai deyam dvijanmane.
all who come within their sight are freed from every sin. To the twice-born who knows the thousand names should be given
Annam vastram dhanam dhanyam nanyebhyastu kadachana, shrimantrarajam yo vetti shrichakram yah samarchati.
food, clothes, money and grain, and never to others. Whoever knows the king of mantras, worships the Shri Chakra,
Yah kirtayati namani tam satpatram vidurbudhah, tasmai deyam prayatnena shridevipritimichchhata.
and chants the names, the wise call a worthy recipient; one who wants the Goddess’s favour should give to them with care.
One who neither chants the names nor knows the king of mantras should be known as no better than an animal; what is given to them is wasted.
Parikshya vidyavidushastebhyo dadyadvichakshanah, shrimantrarajasadrisho yatha mantro na vidyate.
The discerning should test those who know this knowledge and give to them. Just as there is no mantra equal to the king of mantras,
Devata lalitatulya yatha nasti ghatodbhava, rahasyanamasahasratulya nasti tatha stutih.
and no deity equal to Lalita, O Agastya, so there is no hymn equal to these secret thousand names.
Likhitva pustake yastu namasahasramuttamam, samarchayetsada bhaktya tasya tushyati sundari.
Whoever writes these excellent thousand names in a book and always worships it with devotion pleases Sundari, the beautiful Goddess.
Bahunatra kimuktena shrinu tvam kumbhasambhava, nanena sadrisham stotram sarvatantreshu drishyate.
What more need be said? Listen, Agastya: no hymn like this is found in all the tantras.
Tasmadupasako nityam kirtayedidamadarat, ebhirnamasahasraistu shrichakram yorchayetsakrit.
So the devotee should always chant it with reverence. Whoever worships the Shri Chakra even once with these thousand names,
Padmairva tulasipushpaih kalharairva kadambakaih, champakairjatikusumairmallikakaravirakaih.
offering lotuses, tulsi, white water lilies or kadamba flowers, champaka, jasmine, mallika or oleander,
Utpalairbilvapatrairva kundakesarapatalaih, anyaih sugandhikusumaih ketakimadhavimukhaih.
blue lilies, bilva leaves, kunda, kesara or patala, or other fragrant flowers like ketaki and madhavi,
even Maheshvara cannot describe the merit gained. Only Goddess Lalita knows the fruit of worship of her own chakra.
Anye katham vijaniyurbrahmadyah svalpamedhasah, pratimasam paurnamasyamebhirnamasahasrakaih.
How could others, Brahma and the rest, with their limited minds, know it? Every month, on the full moon night, with these thousand names,
Ratrau yashchakrarajasthamarchayetparadevatam, sa eva lalitarupastadrupa lalita svayam.
whoever worships the supreme Goddess in the Shri Chakra becomes Lalita himself, and Lalita herself takes his form.
Na tayorvidyate bhedo bhedakritpapakridbhavet, mahanavamyam yo bhaktah shridevim chakramadhyagam.
There is no difference between them; one who sees a difference commits sin. The devotee who, on Mahanavami, worships the Goddess at the centre of the chakra
Archayennamasahasraistasya muktih kare sthita, yastu namasahasrena shukravare samarchayet.
with the thousand names holds liberation in his hand. Whoever worships the great Goddess with the thousand names on a Friday
Chakraraje mahadevim tasya punyaphalam shrinu, sarvankamanavapyeha sarvasaubhagyasamyutah.
in the Shri Chakra, hear the merit he gains: he attains all desires here, blessed with every good fortune,
Putrapautradisamyukto bhuktva bhoganyathepsitan, ante shrilalitadevyah sayujyamatidurlabham.
with children and grandchildren, enjoying all the pleasures he wishes; and in the end, union with Goddess Lalita, so very rare,
Prarthaniyam shivadyaishcha prapnotyeva na samshayah, yah sahasram brahmananamebhirnamasahasrakaih.
longed for even by Shiva and the gods, he surely attains, without doubt. Whoever, with these thousand names, worships a thousand Brahmins
Samarchya bhojayedbhaktya payasapupashadrasaih, tasmai prinati lalita svasamrajyam prayachchhati.
and feeds them with devotion with sweet rice, cakes and food of six flavours, pleases Lalita, and she grants him her own empire.
Na tasya durlabham vastu trishu lokeshu vidyate, nishkamah kirtayedyastu namasahasramuttamam.
Nothing in the three worlds is beyond his reach. Whoever chants these excellent thousand names without desire for reward
Brahmajnanamavapnoti yena muchyeta bandhanat, dhanarthi dhanamapnoti yashorthi chapnuyadyashah.
gains knowledge of Brahman, which frees him from bondage. One seeking wealth gains wealth, one seeking fame gains fame,
Vidyarthi chapnuyadvidyam namasahasrakirtanat, nanena sadrisham stotram bhogamokshapradam mune.
and one seeking learning gains learning by chanting the thousand names. O sage, no hymn equals this in granting both worldly joy and liberation.
Kirtaniyamidam tasmadbhogamoksharthibhirnaraih, chaturashramanishthaishcha kirtaniyamidam sada.
So it should be chanted by those who seek worldly joy and liberation, and always by those in all four stages of life,
Svadharmasamanushthanavaikalyaparipurtaye, kalau papaikabahule dharmanushthanavarjite.
to make up for any lapses in following their own dharma. In the Kali age, so full of sin and empty of righteous practice,
Namasankirtanam muktva nrinam nanyatparayanam, laukikadvachananmukhyam vishnunamanukirtanam.
people have no refuge other than chanting the names. Better than worldly talk is chanting Vishnu’s names;
Vishnunamasahasrachcha shivanamaikamuttamam, shivanamasahasrachcha devya namaikamuttamam.
better than a thousand names of Vishnu is one name of Shiva; and better than a thousand names of Shiva is one name of the Goddess.
Devinamasahasrani kotishah santi kumbhaja, teshu mukhyam dashavidham namasahasramuchyate.
There are countless thousand-name hymns of the Goddess, Agastya; among them, ten are said to be the chief.
Ganga bhavani gayatri kali lakshmih sarasvati, rajarajeshvari bala shyamala lalita dasha.
They are of Ganga, Bhavani, Gayatri, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Rajarajeshvari, Bala, Shyamala and Lalita: these ten.
Rahasyanamasahasramidam shastam dashasvapi, tasmatsankirtayennityam kalidoshanivrittaye.
Of these ten, this secret thousand names is the most praised. So chant it daily to remove the faults of the Kali age.
Mukhyam shrimatrinameti na jananti vimohitah, vishnunamaparah kechichchhivanamaparah pare.
Deluded people do not know that the names of the holy Mother are foremost. Some are devoted to Vishnu’s names, others to Shiva’s;
Na kashchidapi lokeshu lalitanamatatparah, yenanya devatanama kirtitam janmakotishu.
hardly anyone in the world is devoted to Lalita’s names. Only one who has chanted the names of other gods over countless lifetimes
Tasyaiva bhavati shraddha shridevinamakirtane, charame janmani yatha shrividyopasako bhavet.
comes to have faith in chanting the names of the Goddess. Just as one becomes a worshipper of Shri Vidya only in one’s final birth,
Namasahasrapathashcha tatha charamajanmani, yathaiva virala loke shrividyarajavedinah.
so too the recitation of the thousand names comes only in the final birth. Just as those who know the royal Shri Vidya are rare in the world,
Tathaiva viralo guhyanamasahasrapathakah, mantrarajajapashchaiva chakrarajarchanam tatha.
so rare is one who recites these secret thousand names. Chanting the king of mantras, worshipping the Shri Chakra,
Rahasyanamapathashcha nalpasya tapasah phalam, apathannamasahasram prinayedyo maheshvarim.
and reciting the secret names are not the fruit of small austerity. One who tries to please the great Goddess without reciting the thousand names
Sa chakshusha vina rupam pashyedeva vimudhadhih, rahasyanamasahasram tyaktva yah siddhikamukah.
is a fool trying to see forms without eyes. One who abandons the secret thousand names yet longs for spiritual powers
Sa bhojanam vina nunam kshunnivrittimabhipsati, yo bhakto lalitadevyah sa nityam kirtayedidam.
surely hopes to end his hunger without food. Whoever is a devotee of Goddess Lalita should chant this daily.
Nanyatha priyate devi kalpakotishatairapi, tasmadrahasyanamani shrimatuh prayatah pathet.
The Goddess is not pleased any other way, even over countless ages. So, with a disciplined mind, recite the secret names of the holy Mother.
Iti te kathitam stotram rahasyam kumbhasambhava, navidyavedine bruyannabhaktaya kadachana.
Thus I have told you this secret hymn, Agastya. Never share it with one who does not know this knowledge, or with one without devotion.
Yathaiva gopya shrividya tatha gopyamidam mune, pashutulyeshu na bruyajjaneshu stotramuttamam.
Just as Shri Vidya is to be kept secret, so is this, O sage. Do not tell this excellent hymn to people who are like animals.
Yo dadati vimudhatma shrividyarahitaya cha, tasmai kupyanti yoginyah sonarthah sumahansmritah.
The foolish one who gives it to someone without Shri Vidya angers the yoginis, and that is held to be a great misfortune.
Rahasyanamasahasram tasmatsangopayedidam, svatantrena maya noktam tavapi kalashodbhava.
So guard these secret thousand names well. I did not tell it even to you on my own, O Agastya;
Lalitapreranenaiva mayoktam stotramuttamam, tena tushta mahadevi tavabhishtam pradasyati.
I have spoken this excellent hymn only at Lalita’s prompting. Pleased by this, the great Goddess will grant your wishes.
Ityuktva shrihayagrivo dhyatva shrilalitambikam, anandamagnahridayah sadyah pulakitobhavat.
Having said this, Lord Hayagriva meditated on Mother Lalita, and his heart, immersed in bliss, at once thrilled with joy.
