Atha varini ghorataram phaninam prativarayitum kritadhirbhagavan, drutamaritha tiraganipatarum vishamarutashoshitaparnachayam.

Then, Lord, resolved to drive out the terrible serpent in the water, you quickly climbed the kadamba tree on the bank, its leaves withered by the poisonous wind.

Adhiruhya padamburuhena cha tam navapallavatulyamanojnarucha, hradavarini durataram nyapatah parighurnitaghoratarangagane.

Climbing it with your lotus feet, lovely as fresh new leaves, you leapt far out into the lake, where terrible waves were churning.

Bhuvanatrayabharabhrito bhavato gurubharavikampivijrimbhijala, parimajjayati sma dhanuhshatakam tatini jhatiti sphutaghoshavati.

Under the great weight of you who bear the three worlds, the river’s waters shook and swelled, and with a loud roar suddenly flooded a hundred bow-lengths around.

    Atha dikshu vidikshu parikshubhitabhramitodaravarininadabharaih, udakadudagaduragadhipatistvadupantamashantarushandhamanah.

Then, amid the roar of water heaving and swirling in every direction, the serpent king rose from the depths toward you, his mind blind with unrelenting rage.

    Phanashringasahasravinihsrimarajvaladagnikanogravishambudharam, puratah phaninam samalokayatha bahushringinamanjanashailamiva.

Before you, you saw the serpent, its thousand hoods like peaks spewing sparks of fire and dreadful poison, like a dark mountain with many peaks.

Jvaladakshipariksharadugravishashvasanoshmabharah sa mahabhujagah, paridashya bhavantamanantabalam samaveshtayadasphutacheshtamaho.

That great serpent, its blazing eyes dripping fierce poison and its breath scorching, bit you, whose strength is infinite, and coiled tight around you as you lay as if unable to move. How strange!

Avilokya bhavantamathakulite tatagamini balakadhenugane, vrajagehatalepyanimittashatam samudikshya gata yamunam pashupah.

Not seeing you, the boys and cows on the bank were frantic; and in Vraja too, seeing hundreds of bad omens at home, the cowherds rushed to the Yamuna.

Akhileshu vibho bhavadiya dashamavalokya jihasushu jivabharam, phanibandhanamashu vimuchya javadudagamyata hasajusha bhavata.

When everyone, Lord, seeing your plight, was ready to give up their lives, you quickly freed yourself from the serpent’s coils and rose up swiftly, smiling.

Adhiruhya tatah phanirajaphanan nanrite bhavata mridupadarucha, kalashinjitanupuramanjumilatkarakankanasankulasankvanitam.

Then, climbing onto the serpent king’s hoods, you danced with your soft, lovely feet, to the sweet jingle of anklets blending with the tinkle of bracelets.

Jahrishuh pashupastutushurmunayo vavrishuh kusumani surendraganah, tvayi nrityati marutagehapate paripahi sa mam tvamadantagadat.

As you danced, the cowherds rejoiced, the sages were delighted, and the hosts of gods showered flowers. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from untamed illness.
